Why are you so fancy?

Hey everyone! I really debated on writing this post, but after mulling it over decided to go for it...

Recently I received an from a reader. This is an exact cut and paste....

"Hi Heather! I love your blog, and think your kids are adorable. I also follow you on Twitter and Instagram. I don't mean for this to sound weird, or be offensive, but you seem to be very fancy. Like I said, this isn't meant as an insult. I'm just curious. Are you like that ALL the time, or are you just putting on a show for social media? I have two kids also, but they're older than yours. I'm pretty much in sweatshirts and one of my husband's t-shirts all day everyday. I just don't see the point of wearing anything nicer than that. Anyways, like I said this isn't meant to be an insult at all. If you really are like that all the time, I guess I'm wondering why? Or maybe you could share simple tips on how to be fancier? Hehehe! I guess i don't really know my point in emailing you this. I guess I'm just nosy. If you get back to me great, if not I understand."

I'm nosy too, so I emailed her back, and asked if it was ok to post this. She agreed as long as I kept her name out of it.

So......fancy. It's a fun word.  One of my favorites in fact, though I wouldn't consider myself a fancy person. Yes, I get *dressed* every morning, but most people do, right? Don't get me wrong, occasionally I'll have a totally lazy day and stay in my pj's but it is rare. Three days a week I'm taking Leila to school, and pretty much every other day of the week I'm running errands, meeting with local customers, going out with my husband - basically being forced to be out of my house. BUT I do like to put on my pajamas nice and early :)

I guess when I get dressed I feel like it takes just as much effort to put on a pair of nice, clean jeans as it does to put on a pair of sweats. That being said, though, my jeans are cheapies (Target and Old Navy brand!) and I'm in flip flops almost everyday.

Like I said - I don't think I'm a "fancy" person, but I do enjoy pretty, girly things.  The author of the email asked for simple tips on being fancier, so here they are.

1. Throw on some lip gloss. You can find super moisturizing ones that feel like chapstick on your lips. Killing two birds with one stone there. My current favorite lip gloss is Trout Pout by Butter London.

2. Wear a statement necklace. The one pictured is "The Addison" by Spike the Punch. She makes gorgeous jewelry but it's hard to get a hold of. Target also makes some really wonderful pieces, including some great statement necklaces. A statement necklace helps you look chic, even if you're just adding it to a simple t-shirt and jeans.

3. Stack on the bangles. I loooooooove me some good arm candy. An arm stacked with some gorgeous bangles always adds some fancy to your outfit. The ones pictured are from Francesca's. I also love Forever 21, Indian markets and Target for colorful bangles.

4. BIG sunglasses! If you don't have time to put on eye makeup, wear these bad boys with your lip gloss and you'll look perfectly made up. I've recently discovered a great seller on Amazon - Triple Optic. They have a great variety of  really high quality, designer-inspired sunnies all for around $10!

So, those are my few quick tips to add a little fancy. For anyone else who might think I'm an overly fancy person, let me assure you I am not. I just know that if I'm looking halfway decent it puts me in a good mood. I'm just a mama, trying to do her best, fancy or not.

Have a great day, friends!

As a new mother, I can attest to the need of getting up and getting dressed in the am. I'm totally that mom at library time in heels and sequins. I love the recommendations that you gave and think they are spot on..continue to be fancy girl ;)

This made me laugh a lot - all I could think is Oh, you fancy, huh!?

All your suggestions are great - adding heels makes any ensemble "fancy," but usually I'm not willing to deal with the discomfort (much to the disappointment of my 6'4" boyfriend)

What a really great post. As a faithful reader I always think you look fantstic and well put togetehr so these tips are perfect. I'm not a mom yet but I agree sometimes just getting a little "fancy" helps me feel a bit better about myself.

I enjoy looking through your blog. I admire that you can get up and look "made up" nearly every day! With 2 babies, ages 2 and 1 , I have a very hard time getting up and out of the house. Hopefully one of these days I will make myself get up, shower before the kids are up, and get out and about! What time do you wake up each day to shower? :-)

...and your new name is Fancy Pants in my email address book. :)

I agree that even when it takes one (or sometimes 10) extra minutes to doll it up a little, it's one of the best investments you can make in your day. The little bit of "fancy" can make you feel so much better, and in a good mood there is nothing you can't do!

I'm a huge fan of the no-mascara-huge-sunnies RX for a quick fix of fabulous too. :)

I think it's awesome that you make an effort for yourself. It's encouraging to see a Mama a busy one at that getting herself dressed, being proud of herself and getting fancy. :) I love your style and that you are so girly girl. Totally makes me love you more. I also love your tips, totally doable for every mama!

I always loved your "what I wore" posts. I'm a fan of adding a scarf to my jean jacket throw on some ear rings and a accent ring and your jeans and tshirt turns into an outfit add a pop of color with a handbag and you got it! And as you said your accessories don't have to be pricey to make a statement. I don't think of you as fancy just an accessory goddess!LOL

These are good tips. Although I rarely wear heals due to a back injury when I was 21.

But anyway - I LOVE getting dressed up every day. Though I don't dress "fancy" I try and look nice. I feel better about myself - I get so much more stuff done. And the mister doesn't mind either. ;)

Fun post! :)

love it. as a mom of a 3 month old and a 10 yr. old sometimes it is hard to be "put together" each day but I find that I feel better when I get a little fancy. even if it just means putting on dangly earrings.
makeup is a MUST for me. I don't even leave the house without mascara.....

you are a total inspiration to me! i would easily get in a rut of a track suit or yoga pants and a tank and nothing else. i have really been putting out an effort to put on makeup and do my hair, at least. i know when school starts, it'll be different. but it is certainly easy for stay at home moms to get in a rut. i LOVE that you are always so on top of it and always look so effortlessly fabulous.

That's so funny! FANCY - LOVE that word too! WIWW has totally gotten me to get dressed every day (except days like today and saturday when I have been working in the garage). I guess what I want to say IS it takes as much effort to be "fancy" as it does to be in sweats and a t-short. When I am dressed I feel like I can TAKE ON THE WORLD!! Funny how jeans and t can do that vs. comfy clothes!
