Hair Obsession: No Heat Curls

Now, I am in no way claiming this technique is mine.  I saw it on this blog, who found it here.  Seriously, watch the tutorial.  It's kind of long, but totally worth it.  I just want to tell you how I think is the best way to do it for fine hair, where the other two focus on much thicker hair.

Overnight my hair went from pretty much straight, with a light wave to this:

...with absolutely no heat!  Watch the video tutorial for full instructions, but here are a few tips I wanted to pass on for fine hair:
  • Skip the hair serum before putting your hair into the elastic band.  Use a tiny bit after, because you'll inevitably get a few pieces that get a tad frizzy.  Focus your hair serum on those.
  • Use a slightly tighter headband (I used one of Gianna's elastic bow headbands)  I think a tighter one holds fine hair better, giving you the best curls possible.
  • Use smaller strands of hair in the front to get more uniform waves.
  • If you want beachy waves pull a lot of hair out of the top of your elastic, so that they start lower down.  Grab and comb bigger strands of hair to put into your elastic, and don't worry about them being in there too tight.
  • Comb the strands of hair before you tuck them into the elastic.  Towards the back I got lazy and stopped combing, and those were the pieces that didn't turn out the best.
  • And try not to get lazy.  I did towards the back, because I wasn't watching what I was doing (I was actually watching "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding") and I just grabbed big pieces.  Next time I'll do it in front of a mirror
Good luck, and have fun! This really is the easiest technique for curls I've ever seen!!  My husband calls it my Taylor Swift hair :)

PS - have you entered the earring giveaway yet?

I started doing this last week and love it. My hair is super straight and doesn't like to curl. This method gives me big wavy curls that last all day. Love it!

Thanks for the tips! I love how your hair turned out. I may have to try this as a hair do on my long trip this week. Maybe leave my hair wrapped up to sleep in & on the drive (12hrs). When I get to my sisters I'll have a great hairdo to rock. Hopefully! =D

Long time reader, first time commenter. I just wanted to let you know that I think you are an inspiration. I'm not a size 2, I am a normal sized American woman, and I find it refreshing to come to your blog and see your real style posts, and now this tutorial. I'd much rather take advice from a beautiful, normal size woman than a toothpick.

Also, I think I remember reading either here or on facebook that you used to do makeup professionally. Would you maybe do some makeup tutorials? Like I said, I'd much rather read from someone who looks similar to me. Thanks so much.

Thanks for sharing this, I think I may actually be able to do this.It looks beautiful. My hair doesn't hold curl very good so would you say lots of hairspray after the headband is out or some spray gel before you start?

What is the best type of elastic/headband to use? I have a very small head and my hair stayed in the front, but fell out of the back. Suggestions? Thanks!

Rachel - I have a pretty small head too, so I used one of my 16-month-old's headbands (big giant bow and all!) That definitely helped for me. Good luck!
